The City of West Fargo, West Fargo Police Department, North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and Red River Valley Fair Association are asking the public to avoid Sheyenne Street construction zones to reach the Red River Valley Fair July 10-15, 2018.

The suggested alternate routes to reach the fair include utilizing 32nd, 40th and 52nd Avenues to reach Veterans Boulevard and heading north on Veterans Boulevard to Interstate 94 or Main Avenue; or heading west on 32nd, 40th, and 52nd Avenues to 38th Street W. and heading north to Interstate 94. Exit #343 of Interstate 94 (Main Avenue W.), which has been under construction, will be open for both directions of traffic during the fair.

“These construction zones have reduced lane sizes, uneven terrain and other variables that make them difficult to traverse right now,” said West Fargo Police Department Chief Heith Janke. “When we add in traffic from the fair, we create a congested area that endangers the traveling public and personnel working on these sites. And of course, we want to remind everyone to never drink and drive which only adds to the dangers.”

The City of West Fargo has also announced that a stretch of Sheyenne Street from 13th Avenue W. to near Interstate 94 is tentatively scheduled to close from just after 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, July 13, for paving operations. During this time, only residents with driveway access on the west side of Sheyenne Street north of 19th Avenue W. will be able to use Sheyenne Street. There will be no other through traffic. The east side of the 17th Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street intersection also closed Monday, July 9, for underground utility work and paving operations and is scheduled to reopen Friday, July 20, for the traveling public.

“There are a number of alternate routes for reaching the fair and utilizing Sheyenne Street or 13th Avenue W. near Sheyenne Street is just not an efficient option right now,” said Chris Brungardt, City of West Fargo Public Works Director. “With the installation of a new stoplight at 15th Avenue W. by the ND DOT we are going to have a much smoother process for getting people into the fair from Main Avenue.”

The Sheyenne Street construction zone stretches from 13th Avenue W. to 32nd Avenue W. and includes the reconstruction of city streets, the Sheyenne Street interchange and the diversion bridge. When completed, this project will add additional lanes and a safer, more efficient interchange for a corridor that faces congestion at peak travel times in the morning and afternoon. Segment 1 and 2 of the city project, which stretches from 13th Avenue W. to 32nd Avenue W., is expected to be completed by winter suspension 2018. The Interstate 94 interchange is a two-year project and is expected to be completed by winter suspension 2019. 32nd Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W. will also be reconstructed during the 2019 construction season.
