[ARCHIVED] Mayor Rich Mattern embracing pink for breast cancer awareness

Rich Mattern, mayor of West Fargo, will be embracing his pink side this October to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.

For every $1,000 raised through his Real Men Wear Pink donation site, Mattern – a cancer survivor himself – will partner with Men’s Hair Co. to have a pink streak put in his hair. If he reaches $5,000, Mattern promises to have his whole head of hair go pink. In 2016, Mattern shaved off his signature mustache after he successfully raised more than $3,000 for the cause.

“With one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, it’s almost impossible not to be impacted by this disease in some way,” said Mattern. “I’ve known many courageous women who have had to face this battle and I want to continue to show my support for them through this effort.”

Every dollar raised to turn Mattern’s locks pink also helps the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer through early detection and prevention, innovative breast cancer research, and patient support. The American Cancer Society currently funds more than $62 million in breast cancer research grants nationwide. They also provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer when and where they need it. And, the American Cancer Society helps people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.
