The West Fargo Municipal Airport awarded its first aviation-focused scholarship to Rachel Schiltz and Cole Bertrand, students in Sheyenne High School’s aviation program. To be eligible for the $500 scholarship, students were required to be a senior enrolled in the program, complete required coursework and plan to pursue a career in aviation or aerospace after graduation.
“These two students impressed the Airport Authority with their professional applications that showed effort, attention to detail and passion for the industry,” said airport representative, Robbie Grande.
Schiltz and Bertrand will be pursuing commercial aviation at the University of North Dakota beginning in fall 2020. The scholarship is an effort to help the aviation industry, which is experiencing industry wide labor shortages.
“From pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers and everything in between, there is a shortage. The key to keeping the industry thriving is going to be getting young people interested and, hopefully, pursuing careers in it,” said Grande.
