[ARCHIVED] Commission President Bernie Dardis presents State of the City at FMWF Chamber of Commerce Event

Commission President Dardis presents State of the City

West Fargo Commission President Bernie Dardis presented the state of the City of West Fargo during the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce’s annual State of the Cities event.

During his speech, Commission President Dardis reviewed highlights from 2019 and future challenges the City of West Fargo will address in 2020. Notably, in 2019 the reconstruction of Sheyenne Street from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W., including the complete rebuilding of the interchange, was completed. Highlights also included an increase in commercial and residential building permits, population, elementary schools and businesses located within West Fargo.

Facing a record number of calls for service in 2019, Dardis also showcased the efforts of the West Fargo Police Department to address drug issues through a partnership with the Fargo Police Department’s Narcotics Task Force, the transfer of the West Fargo Fire Department to an official City of West Fargo department and work both agencies to engage with the community through proactive outreach efforts to keep the community safe.

While the City of West Fargo had much to celebrate, Dardis also took the time to discuss mental health, addiction and affordable housing challenges the City will have to address in 2020 and beyond. The City of West Fargo had 93 reported suicides or attempted suicides in 2019 and 898 incidents relating to drugs and DUIs. While the numbers are shocking, Dardis reported they were down from 2018 – meaning the concentrated effort across the community is working and should continue to remain top of mind. Dardis also highlighted the rise in concern of affordable housing options that was apparent in 2018, and efforts the City of West Fargo has been a part of in 2019.
